The Story

Finding Safety in the Darkness

Oct. 28, 2003 | By Amanda Stewart, DSJ Staff Reporter

William and Mary students who find themselves out late alone on campus don’t have to risk the dangers associated with walking home alone.

Instead of walking back to their on-campus dorms late at night, students can call Escort, a service run by members of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega(APO).

Students can call Escort and request a team of two students to come walk with them or drive them in a golf cart to their on-campus rooms. Escort was started by APO as an initiative to keeps students safe.

“It was started to promote campus safety,” said Escort project manager, Ben Miller.

The service provided by this organization also frees the campus police to attend to other tasks.

“If we do this, it is something campus police doesn’t have to do,” Miller said.

Escort is available Sunday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., and Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. The service averages five calls over the five-hour period the service is available each night, Miller said. The group encourages more people to call and make use of their service.

“We get a decent number of calls each night,” Miller said, “but we wish more people used it.”

Escort can be reached at 221-3293. The number can be found on the back of William and Mary I.D. cards.
