The Story

"Captain America" Brings Superhero Magic to the Big Screen

Jul. 23, 2011 | By Morgan Barker, DSJ Co-Editor in Chief

***Spoiler Alert***

Finally, a superhero film I can support. â€"Captain America: The First Avenger” arrives in theatres this weekend and is sure to dazzle audiences and critics alike with its action sequences and good old-fashioned patriotism.

â€"Captain America” opens with the story of a scrawny Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) attempting to do his patriotic duty and enlist in WWII era America. The army rejects him no less than five times until Dr. Erskine (Stanley Tucci) sees a hero in the making and chooses Rogers for a super soldier project.

One Nazi spy and an epic chase scene later, Captain America is the new poster child of the US military. Unfortunately his super powers aren’t being utilized. So, Captain America must lead an assault on Hydra (a Nazi organization that finds mystical objects) to become the hero he’s meant to be. The remainder of the movie is spent covering Captain America’s quest to defeat the Red Skull (the leader of Hydra).

Captain America is cinematic gold. It combines the brilliance of Indiana Jones, 1940’s glamour and a little Marvel universe magic to create an instant summer blockbuster.

My only complaint is that the film dragged a bit towards the beginning. It spent a considerable amount of time introducing Captain America and comparably little time on the battle against the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).

Moviegoers should be sure to remember that this film is part of a series of origin stories leading up to the release of â€"The Avengers” next summer. If you stay after the credits, you’ll get a sneak peak of the first trailer for the film. With a star studded cast (Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson) and Joss Whedon as director, â€"The Avengers” looks very promising.

After the abysmal performance of â€"Green Lantern,” â€"Captain America” restores my faith in super hero films. 4 out of 5 stars.
