LiVE: Help Lives, Save Lives, Live Life is a non-profit organization on campus that aims to spread public health awareness through Public Health Awareness week, Lick for A Cure, their AIDS Walk, as well as other events in the community throughout the year. Their fashion show is one of their most exciting events of the entire year, rallying together a group of people for a common cause, and this year it was for breast and prostate cancer awareness, donating all of the proceeds to the Newport News Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
“Save Second Base” was not a few people walking on a runway but rather an exciting, elaborate production that included a variety of entertainment from hip-hop choreography to live rappers during the intermission.
The fashion show included 21 student models, both male and female, and even featured outside models as well as several members of the Tribe football team. The football players were an audience favorite, flirting with the audience and grooving to the music. It seemed as if every girl in the auditorium was sitting on the edge of their seats, waiting for another football player to take his shirt off so that they could holla’ at their boy.
The show was composed of five scenes, each with a separate theme that related to breast cancer or prostate cancer. The first scene, choreographed by Cathy Kuangu, was titled “No Boys Allowed”, and highlighted female models strutting around in bras and Lucky brand jeans and the men, shirtless, wore pink bows tied around their chests. Other scenes were themed “Think Pink”, “Save the Tatas”, “Know Your Enemy- Get Tested”, and “Prostate Cancer Blows!”
The fashions from the show came from outside designers such as Weirdoe and N-Dividual Klothing, as well as vendors from the Williamsburg Prime Outlets such as Lucky Brand Jeans and BCBG Max Azria. Makeup by Ti3221 and Natalie Gordon of Avenue 42, as well as unique, high fashion heels completed the models’ looks.
Entertainment of the night included hip hop beats thrown down by DJ Mic Check, N.E.S., 3D Pro, CaezTheKid (CTK), and K. Spitten (Keith Taylor). The entertainment was an unexpected bonus to the night’s line-up and a fabulous way to get the crowd involved in the show.
The producer of “Save Second Base”, Carmen Daniel, did a fabulous job putting the event together. LiVE pulled out all stops, putting flava’ in unexpected places with the shirtless football players, sexy choreography, and live hip-hop entertainment. It was an enjoyable evening of fashion and music for everyone, and I am sure that every girl left the show with a smile on her face.
