Colonial Couture: Spring Cleaning

Let’s be realistic, most of us haven’t dusted or vacuumed our rooms for quite some time, or maybe NEVER. However, when the spring sunshine starts to illuminate every nook and cranny of our rooms, the dust on every surface becomes quite apparent. No, it’s not another snowstorm. It’s a reminder that you need to start your spring cleaning.

Most importantly, we need to address our closets, where you’ll likely find an accumulation of dance party clothes and old socks that may not even be yours. Here are some tips for organizing your closet so that you can put your most fashionable foot forward this spring, even if you’re wearing someone else’s dirty socks. Here are my tips:

1. If you haven’t worn it since move in day, chances are you will never will. Consider tossing it or sending it home. Every extra inch of space counts.

2. If you borrowed it, return it. I remember girl from my freshman hall that borrowed a pair of shoes for her sorority mixer. Well, I never got them back. You know who you are.

3. Maybe you gained the freshman-fifteen or the freshman-forty, suddenly all of your jeans are now “skinny jeans”. Do yourself a favor and keep your closet mostly outfitted with clothes that fit. Send them home until they fit again.

4. Heaven forbid you find a sweatshirt from “that guy”. You know, the one you hooked up with him during the first week of school, however, now you would rather forget about him. While a guy’s hoodie is a great thing to have, at this point it can be an awful reminder of a few relationship regrets, those not quite Tribe choices.

5. Save space by only hanging in-season clothes. You might be surprised at how much space your puffy winter parka takes up. Just cross your fingers that the snowstorms stay up at UVA.

6. I’ll suggest 3 necessities for ladies this spring: Have a sundress that makes you feel feminine and is versatile. Invest in a wide belt to help give you that coke-bottle shape. Lastly, layer a simple, neutral cardigan for use over top of a going-out-top to make it classroom appropriate.

7. Here are 3 necessities for gentleman: Wear a graphic Tee. It’s more sophisticated than your high-school band camp shirt. Have a nice pair of dark jeans, it shows girls that you would dress well on a date. Lastly, you can’t go wrong with a hoodie, it works with many styles and is practical as well.

Go ahead, William and Mary students, dive into those dusty closets and get your fash-on!
