The Story

Women's Basketball Falls to Wilmington

Feb. 25, 2009 | By Joseph Mark, DSJ Staff Reporter

The Tribe Women's basketball team fell 66-70 to UNC-Wilmington in Overtime over the weekend, dropping to 12-14(5-10CAA). The result spoiled a record-setting performance from Tiffany Benson, who recorded a school-high 9 blocks in the contest, to go along with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Seahawks led by as many as 10 with 13:54 remaining, but the Tribe used a 26-7 run to stretch their lead to 9, 62-53, with 4:09 to play. Unfortunately the Tribe would not score again in regulation. Seahawk guard Greta Luksyte was fouled by Courtney Portell with 1 second remaining and hit all 3 free-throws to send the game to overtime tied 62-62.

Luksyte continued to lead the Seahawks in overtime, hitting two free-throws to put UNC-W ahead 66-64, then scored on a lay-up with 9 seconds remaining to give the Seahawks their final winning margin 70-66.

Freshman sensation Taysha Pye continued her torrid pace, scoring a career high 23 points on 10-16 shooting. She also gathered 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. She is averaging 17.2 points over her last six games.

The Tribe will finish their regular season with two home games this week against perennial front-runner James Madison on Thursday (2/26) at 7pm and Sunday (3/1) at 2pm against Towson.
