Remember when you were a freshman? Remember how difficult it was to figure out how you were going to spend the next four years? Navigating your way around the College can be daunting, especially during those first few months. So what should you do to pass the time? The College is welcoming a new generation of freshmen. Here are a few of the options to help you get on your feet and into the Williamsburg state of mind.
Talk to People
As redundant as it sounds, opening your mouth can actually be a big step. Ask for advice, share some stories, or tell them about getting lost on your way to Morton. Don’t be worried about sounding stupid, chances are, your stories will inspire them to share their own embarrassing experiences as a newbie.
W & M T-shirt
It's like the unofficial badge to another world, except important enough to define you for the next four years. Do yourself a favor and find one. Especially during your freshman year, you’ll most definitely be bombarded by free shirts from every direction. Take pride in your school and your community, wear your shirt around campus and enjoy being part of such a spirited school.
Spread the Love
Take everything in stride and try to achieve a balance. It’s all about figuring out what you want to do and what you want to learn. Don't limit yourself to the books, but don't party all night. Working out at the gym doesn't hurt either - especially with the new and improved Rec, only a few years old. And most importantly, do join a club or team. IM sports are huge on campus and students typically join a few clubs. Get involved and try new things; you’ll be surprised with what you’ll find.
Laundry Times
Many of you may have already guessed, but weekends are a no-no. However, they make ideal spots for ranting or agonizing to peers about laundry woes and wait cycles. Who knows, maybe you’ll pick up some tips and even get to know someone in your dorm. Just don’t forget the fabric softener.
Hall Spirit
Attempt to love your floor. If you're lucky, some of your dorm mates with stick with you for a very long time. You guys are adapting to the College together, you could bond fast. Go to football games with them, get dressed up for activities, and participate in hall programs. Have fun. You might make some life-long friends and have some great stories.
To the freshmen of the College: experience all you can. The College can offer some great opportunities. Try to try as much as you can. Welcome!
