The Story

Hopkins Wins SA Presidency with 45 percent Margin

Incumbents Valerie Hopkins ('09) and Zach Pilchen ('09) will be undergoing a role reversal: Hopkins and Pilchen have been elected as Student Assembly president and vice president.

Challengers Adam Rosen ('09) and Emily Nuñez ('09) received 25 percent of the popular vote, while Hopkins and Pilchen received 70 percent.

In response to her election as SA president, Hopkins said, "It's a combination of the news still setting in and the fact that I don't feel that much has changed with Zach and my relationship."

Pilchen said, "The election results are an indication that we have brought student power in Williamsburg to a new level. Next year, we will bring it to the next level."

Both Hopkins and Pilchen boast about the pursuit of transparency, especially in wake of the controversy surrounding former College president Gene Nichol's resignation.

Rosen and Nuñez, both transfer students, also underlined transparency throughout their campaign. They proposed change that would make the SA more accessible by updating the SA Web site more often and making podcasts or videos to keep students up to date on the goings-on of the SA.

"We did much better than we expected," Rosen said. "Few transfer students run against incumbents. We really felt like our insurgent campaign brought out a lot of new ideas that students wanted to be heard."

Four referenda were also placed on the undergraduate ballot.

The Green Fees referendum, which asked students' opinions about adding $15 per semester to their general fees in pursuit of sustainability. The measure passed with 85 percent voting yes.

The police department behavior referendum passed with 55 percent, which asked students if they perceived campus police as being too severe.

The Save-a-Professor referendum, which passed with 83 percent, asked students if they would support a $7 increase in tuition to give extra benefit packages to certain professors with the goal of retaining excellent teachers.

The HBO referendum asked whether students support additional fees to acquire HBO on-campus and/or a reduction of funding for the campus movie channel. A plurality of students did not support the addition of HBO and accompanying fees, and voted to maintain the funding for the campus movie channel.

As a final comment on the election, Pilchen said, "We have another 365 days ahead of us. But we're just going to take a breather tonight and get started again tomorrow."
