The Story

A Different Kind of Sex Ed

On average, it takes a woman 20 minutes to have an orgasm. The average man takes only 2 - 5 minutes.

That’s just one of the fun facts you can learn at “I <3 Female Orgasm,” a program hosted by VOX and UCAB. The program will be Monday at 7 p.m. in the UC Commonwealth.

Sex and relationship educators Marshall Miller and Dorian Solot present the program, their most popular and one of many they bring to college campuses, businesses, churches, conferences, and adult education centers across the country. Other programs educate students on Gay/Lesiban/Bisexual/Transgender/Queer and Safer Sex issues.

Miller has a degree in Sexuality and Society from Brown University and has years of experience working with HIV and STD prevention programs and safe sex education.

Solot was also trained as a sexuality educator at Brown University and has published many articles about the female orgasm. Solot and Miller’s book, I <3 Female Orgasm: An Extraordinary Orgasm Guide, was published in March 2007.

The “I <3 Female Orgasm” program focuses on sex education and women’s empowerment. Solot and Miller bring a male and female perspective to the subject of the female orgasm, teaching women how to have them and men how to please their girlfriends.

The program also answers common questions about orgasm, discusses body images, offers tips for partners and emphasizes making sexual decisions that are right for the individual.

According to VOX President Devan Barber (’08), what makes the program unique is that it is “tailored to college campuses” and offers “hip, edgy, fun and humorous sex ed.” While the program is highly educational, it has a lighthearted tone and provides information in a “fun, interactive way,” said Barber.

And even though the program centers around the female orgasm, it is inclusive of all genders and sexual orientations. Barber said that it “appeals to the whole campus…I’ve heard men talking about [attending] to learn good tips.”

“I <3 Female Orgasm” also allows students to talk openly about sexuality, a feature that Barber considers to be important, especially in light of recent events at the College.

“This semester, I think students really want to talk about the issues…and hear people’s stories, which we saw with the Sex Workers’ Art Show…They want a chance to ask questions and learn, and I feel we don’t have that on campus right now,” Barber said.

Programs like “I <3 Female Orgasm” give students a forum for this kind of discussion.

Barber said she is excited and expects to learn a lot. She also hopes that the program will bring in “a diverse population” of people who, after listening to Solot and Miller, may “realize they want to get involved politically [with sex education] and be motivated to be activists,” through VOX or another organization.
