The Story

Pointe Blank Takes the Stage

Dec. 6, 2007 | By Megan Grady, DSJ Staff Reporter

Pointe Blank, founded in 1995, is an entirely student-run dance company. The group typically has one show per semester to showcase new dances that the students choreograph. This semester’s show, which took place Sunday, was different because neither of the males in the 29-member company were able to participate, which allowed the ladies to make the show extra-feminine.

“We were all really excited to have a really girly finale, hence the Britney Spears,” said new President Lisa Bateman, ’09.

“We felt like this show was particularly successful,” said Bateman. “This is the first time we’ve ever had a big group number (the kickline).” Pointe Blank usually choreographs numbers for two to eight dancers.

The dancers get to choose what kinds of dances they would like to choreograph and perform at the beginning of each semester. The only requirement for choreographing is that the dancer has been part of the company for one semester. Dances for this show ranged from a jazz number to the song “Crazy Train” to a tap number to “Steam Heat” to the exciting finale with Britney Spears’ “You Drive Me Crazy.”

“I think all of the dances were really well done this semester. Overall, they were more serious and put-together than is sometimes the case, and I think we also had more variety in this show,” said Bateman.

One aspect of the show that was unique was the emceeing. Josh Lovell and Adam Stackhouse kept the crowd laughing between numbers with amusing stories about titles of songs, Sesame Street songs and their own personal dance numbers. It added a new dimension of fun to the already-popular show.

“Commonwealth has never been that crowded for a Pointe Blank show before! It was really exciting,” said Bateman.

Pointe Blank has 29 members in the company but will most likely be having auditions in the spring to add more dancers.
