The Story

Tribe Racquetball Wins State Titles

Nov. 16, 2003 | By John Gibney, Guest Writer

The 2003 Virginia State Doubles Racquetball Tournament was held 31 October through 2 November at the Greenbrier North YMCA in Chesapeake VA and produced state champions from the William and Mary team. Eric Williams, the coach of the William and Mary racquetball team, and Tom Amos, a 2003 graduate of William and Mary, combined efforts to win the Mens B state championship.

The road to the title was not easy. In a tough quarterfinal match, Williams and Amos defeated the team of Pilla and Teritelini 5-15, 15-12, 11-10.

"Looking back that was our most difficult match of the tournament. We were able to regroup and come back with a better stragedy for the 2nd and 3rd games after getting hammered in the first game," commented coach Williams.

The Semifinals proved to be less challenging as Williams and Amos defeated Brookins and Mawe 15-6, 15-8. The Finals was another great display of doubles play as the William and Mary duo defeated Brugger and Eller 15-7, 15-12.

Eric Williams has been coaching the racquetball team since 2001 along with Carl Moody. In that time the Williams and Mary team has produced 4 state titles and 2 intercollegiate state titles.

The club always welcomes new players of any skill level to practice on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 - 7 p.m.

"The great thing about our team is we can match people with players at their level. That way we can give advice on how to improve and as your play gets better so will the people you play," said coach Eric Williams.
